Why Na ions discharge at the cathode in the preference to H ions in the manufacture of NaOH?

In the manufacturing of NaOH H+ ions are discharged at cathode as H2 gas in preference to alkali metals like Na+. Since discharge potential of H+ ions is lower than that of alkali metal cations, thus instead of getting alkali metal ion on cathode, we get H2 gas. . plzz give points
