Hey!

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was founded in 1958 because the Americans no longer wanted to be surpassed by the Soviet Union in the field of space technology
NASA worked intensely on sending human beings into space as soon as possible. However, the Soviets were ahead of them and Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet aviator became the first man to circle the earth. Soon, NASA gave proof of their technological capabilities when Alan B. Shepard, an American aviator, went into space.

Hope this helps! :)

MANVI801: Very good answer ! thanks
