Why neutral pi meson transfer between neutron proton?

a proton would release a π+ mesonand would become a neutron whereas a neutron would release a π- mesonand become proton or vice versa. ► theneutral pi meson is uncharged particle with a mass 264 times that of an electron.

Pi mesons are massive the force is short ranged, i.e. potential is Yukawa type (decays as exponent). In case of electromagnetism (EM), the mediator is massless photon. Thus, EM force is long range force.
