The main reason for setting up the Haldia port is to reduce the pressure on Kolkata sea port. Kolkata sea port is one of the oldest ports in the country, which is still in operation. After building the Haldia sea port, the dock has been used extensively, which reduces the pressure of the Kolkata port extensively.

It is beause it is connected to the industrial centres of eastern India due to the construction of rivers but it made ease to trade from other countries like Nepal , Bangaldesh , Bhutan etc.. that's why new port is developed in Kolkata..
