Nicola and Jacopo didn't shared their problems with the narrator because both of them has seen much harder days. They have lost faith in the people. They don't want to create more troubles in sharing their personal matters with the outsiders. The narrator also seems a stranger to them. They may also think that he is a lion in sheep's clothing. This is yhe reason why they don't wanted to share their problems with the narrator.
