In the presence of sunlight, pure nitric acid decomposes slowly into nitrogen dioxide, water & gaseous oxygen - the former turns the remaining acid yellow or brown (depending on how much is present). To reduce the rate of that decomposition when in storage, it's stored in dark bottles.
