WHY NITROGEN DIFFUSES FASTER THEN CHLORINE

The rate of diffusion of a gas depends on the weight of the gas molecules.  The heavier the molecules the slower they move . The lighter the molecules  the faster they move . Chlorine molecules weight 71 unit , so we would  expect nitrogen to diffuse more quickly than chlorine.

It is obvious that the smaller the molecular weight, the greater is the speed of the molecules of gas.

As chlorine gas has a molar weight of Cl2=71g and nitrogen has a molar weight of N2 28g , it is expected that the molecules of chlorine will diffuse slower compared to the molecules of nitrogen

Hope this will help you.
