nitrogen can form trihalide by sharing or receiving 3 electrons but cannot form pentahalide as its size is small and it doesnot have empty d-orbital to accomodate extra 2 bond.

Hey!!

Nitrogen has only four ( one s and three p ) orbitals in its valence shell. It does not have d orbitals to expand its covalency beyond four. That is why it does not form pentahalides.

Good luck !!
