Nitrogen has 7 electrons out of which 5 electrons are in the outermost or Valence shell. It has 2 electrons in its 2s orbital and 3 electrons in its 2p orbital. So nitrogen in its ground state can have a valency 3 and it can also have 5 valency in its excited state. So valency of nitrogen is either 3 or 5.
