its because of its electonic configuration either it can lose 3 electrons are can gain 5 electrons to complete its octet

because it has 7 electron ...means the configuration is (2,5)
which means to gain the nearest inert gas configuration it sholud have 3 more electrons to gain stability ...thus it makes 3 bonds ans hence is trivalent...
