They are called so because the third world country is a term not referring to development, it refers to the governmental ideology of a country during the Cold War. The US and UK supported democratic capitalist government, and they are called first world countries. Cuba and USSR which acknowledged strength in a democratic communist government, are called second world countries. Countries which haven’t gotten involved in this war and or this discussion are called third world countries. The majority of the world falls under this category.
