Originally each locale used its own time: when the sun was directly overhead then it was noon there. This setup for telling time began to become impractical as transportation became extensive, reliable, and rapid. Railroads, in particular, found that “that was no way to run a railroad”.

In fact, we have the railroads of the United States to thank for getting the concept of time zones started. Since the U.S. spans such a vast east-west distance and the key railway lines transit that way, the problem of keeping time was particularly acute. Thus U.S. railroads set up their own time management scheme but there were still way too many separate times to maintain.

The solution came in 1883 when the U.S. Government established four one-hour-different times zones across America. Other countries in the world had also seen the need for standardizing clock time. Even when one’s nation has no great east-west expanse, it is still desirable to have everyone’s timepiece synchronized. The United Kingdom had already established a common time for the nation.
