I come from Uttarakhand. People from Uttarakhand, Himachal and Jammu & Kashmir are distinct from others, but each region has its own differences and you can tell who comes from here with about 60 percent accuracy. Yes, people from hilly regions are generally taller.
Some men I have met are tall, very well-built without the gym. Women too are taller, lankier. The same doesnt happen with people from Uttarakhand though. While Himachalis and Kashmiris are slightly taller than us, we remain on the shorter size. So do Nepalis. My great-grandfather was 6 feet 6. A few people in my family are tall while most are short. Yes, but the built is strong, larger shoulders, good strength and robust look.
Punjab and Haryana has a good percentage of tall, generally well-built men. Though I personally find haryanvis a little lankier than their Punjabi counterparts. Rajasthan has a good share of both lanky and muscular men.
Most south Indians I have met are lankier. Have a close family friend who is Telugu, so I know their family a bit. Another one, professional contact, is from Karnataka- neither thin nor very strong looking. Somewhere in between, but yeah he is short.
UP and Bihar have their fair share of really tall and muscular men. Most people I have met, whether thinner or with a few extra pounds, have been robust and muscular. A few exceptions remain. They were as lanky as lanky could be.
So I would not say that south indians are better built than north indians or otherwise. You will find a fair share of both kind of people across the land. We are a very diverse country. Sometimes our perceptions are framed by the movies we watch. Truth be told, Indians are strong. We have been a very hard-working and toiling country. So whatever the physique, the shape and all, you will find great strength in people.
