why north western Highlands are not suitable for agriculture
Answers
Answer:
The N-E Himalayan region has started showing the adverse effects of development often very necessary for survival and sustenance of its populace due to the inaccessibility, fragility and vulnerability to external biotic and abiotic interferences under the influence of one of the extreme climatic settings. Land being the most vital, essential resources for sustenance of any form of life, ecological and agricultural systems, environmental health, industrial development, and renewal of land quality have suffered very badly due to gross mismanagement. High rainfall (2000–3500 mm) with higher intensity and erosivity coupled with steeper and/or longer lengths of slopes and faulty land management practices are causing severe soil erosion and land degradation problem in the region. Needless to mention here is the amount of nutrients that is lost to sea along with the organic carbon and most fertile and productive top soil. Mass wasting due to land slides/landslips and erosion of top soil is not only affecting the fertility and productivity of the region but also causing wide spread damage to water bodies and reservoirs by the way of siltation (reduction in the capacity and storage volume) and raising the bed of rivers resulting into repeated flooding in the valley lands.
