The northern plains are formed by the deposition of silt brought down by the rivers. So, the land is very fertile and all the resources and minerals are present there with the level land for agriculture. So a lot of people live in the Northern plains but on the other side islands are covered by water on all sides and due to isolation of them from mainland with the shortage of some minerals and levelled land islands are less populated.
