Sodium ion is already stable so it won't react while sodium atom is unstable and reactive and tends to lose one of its electrons. Sodium of table salt does not react with water like sodium metal BECAUSE it separates from chlorine as ionic sodium and ionic sodium is stable and it is solvated hence it does not react.
