If the earthquake is strong enough and cuts the power, you may be trapped in there for a long period of time. this may be simple to fix in the building or a bigger problem affecting a larger location in which you would be trapped for a longer period of time.
If there is no phone connection, you may be trapped and no one would know you were there, and if people do, time and resources would have to be used on trying to get you out. this would be a problem to emergency services as there a bigger problems to try and deal with.
The chances the elevator would drop is low, depending on the magnitude, and i would think that it would only drop id the building around it collapsed too.
The best way to prevent being trapped in the elevator is to just avoid it during an earthquake and the after shocks.

Hey Dear!
This is the answer!
The biggest risk in using elevator or lift during an earthquake is that the electricity will be cut and you will be stuck.
If the earthquake is very strong then it may cause the lift system to fail completely.
So it's better to use stairs..!
Hope it Helps!!
