Why nucleophilic reaction of carbonyl compound with ammonia derivative is carried out in acidic medium ?

In high acidic medium, ammonia derivative will form their respective salts due to their basic nature and at the same time will lose their nucleophilic nature and hence will not show nucleophilic addition reactions with aldehydes and ketones in high acidic medium.
