Hi,

Your answer :
The hypothesis of oceanic expansion was given by Harry H. Hess (1960-1962) from, on the one hand, the shape of the mid-oceanic wrinkles with their extensive median rift, on the other hand , of the existence of seismic plans, discovered before the Second World War by the Japanese geophysicist Kiyoo Wadati, then rediscovered later by the American seismologist Hugo Benioff, whose name they bear (see subduction, Fig. 1). These plans of Benioff plunge outward from the Pacific under the bordering continents or the island arcs. It was as if, as a result of a double convection at the Pacific scale, the upper mantle, ascending at the level of the median rift, descending at Benioff's planes, gave birth to the oceanic crust in the first case, and the "digested" in the second.

Good bye ;)
