Why oil fire not extinguish by water

Answer:Oil is lighter than water and rests on the surface of it. If water is used as an extinguishing agent it will spread the fire and oil. ... Adding water to hot oil actually causes it to catch fire. So trying to put out an oil fire with water just makes the fire bigger.
