It's because of a physics phenomenon called as mirage

RoliPal: also define mirage
RoliPal: this phenomenon name i also know but i want simple answer for this reason so i can understand
Yashflora97: when light travels from one medium to another ,part of light is reflected and part of the light is refracted. refraction results in change in the velocity of light or in simple language it is the bending of the light rays. in deserts or during the summer days due to excessive heat air near the sand has a very high temp. in the evening the temp of the layer of air above sand gradually decreases. if the temp increases so does density of the air.
Yashflora97: a denser medium has high refractive index. thus the atmosphere mera sand has layers of air having different refractive index
Yashflora97: as a result we get an illusion of running water. all this is a result of refraction of light and more the refraction more varied is the illusion one sees
