Cyanobacteria fix nitrogen in heterocysts in absence of oxygen. ... Since the Nif genes (responsible for synthesis of nitrogenase) are located only in the plasmids of prokaryotes, the eukaryotes are unable to synthesize the enzyme nitrogenase and fail to fix atmospheric nitrogen.
