Why only rate of change of velocity is called acceleration? Why not rate of change of speed??

Because velocity is a vector quantity it consists magnitude and direction both..that's why rate of change of velocity is known as acceleration

Speed and velocity are not two different quantities. The only difference between them is that speed doesn't have direction while velocity.Do, u can also use speed while calculating acceleration.
