Let, a number be x.

We take positive square roots or positive squares not negative roots.

Because if √(-x) = √(-x) × (-x)
then it's root will become a positive no i.e. x
because we know that if any negative number is multiplied by any another negative number then it becomes a positive number.

That's why we do √(-x) = -√x
to make it -√(x) × (x) = -x

Hope it will help.....

because negative number multiply with negative number we will get positive number as well as positive number multiply with positive number we will get positive number so we always get positive square root.
