Solutions are prepared in dilute HNO3 instead of concentrated HNO3.
The original solution is not prepared in concentrated HNO3 acid because conc. HNO3 is a very strong oxidising and nitrating agent.
When nitric acid is used for salt analysis, the conc. HNO3 can oxidize the ions that are present in the solution.
On the other hand, dilute HNO3 is more preferable as it does not oxidize the halide ions in the solution and provide mild acidic conditions.
