Echo is heard only when surfaces are far away.it is because the ears cannot distinguish between the two voices whensound is reflected from a nearby surface .This phenomenon is most commonly observed on the hills . The echo is very clear when on hills.

When you stand on top of a hill or in the midst of a vast jungle amongst soaring trees and shout your name, your bellow, after a short delay, is heard recursively, although successively fainted or dwindled. This returned sound is an echo.
