Nitro group is a electron withdrawing group. So it REDUCES THE ELECTRON DENSITY OF BENZENE and hence benzene abstracts electron from H and releases it as H+.
But Methyl is a Electron-releasing group and hence it increases the electron density od benzene and hence benzene does not abstract electron from H atom.
