Though both countries are currently less developed than the world average, but still India looks a lot developed compared to Pakistan. By statistics, it is clear that the standard of living in Pakistan is lower than all areas in India except 2-3 states.

1. Literacy rate of Pakistan according to 2010 census is 58%, lower than Bihar(63%) which is at the bottom among Indian states. While the Indian average stands at 74% according to 2011 census. World average is at 86%.

2. Infant mortality of 59 is equal to Madhya Pradesh, the state that has highest infant mortality in India. Indian average stands at 41. World average is currently about 30.

3. Also, if you will compare India's most developed state(Kerala) to Pakistan's most developed state(Punjab), you will see that Kerala is ahead by a huge margin in all areas.

Some other statistics include:

1. HDI score of India is 0.609 and that of Pakistan is 0.538 . World average is at 0.630 .

2. India produces number of PHD holders in a year equal to the number that Pakistan has produced in last 20 years.

3. India has its own GPS system, while navigation in Pakistan is carried out by the Chinese GPS.

4. India has 69 artificial satellites in space. While Pakistan has only three.

5. In the world, even today only 85-90% children attend primary schools. In India the rate is 93%, while only 70% of Pakistani children attend primary schools.

This trend is same for most of the development indicators. In nearly all development indicators, Pakistan is lagging behind India by a big margin, despite being better in these areas in 1980 and 1990. Also, India with high GDP growth rate of 7.5% is set to increase the difference by even bigger margin. Pakistan currently has the growth rate of only 4.5%.

Some of the reasons why Pakistan looks much less developed compared to India :

1. In India, military has never ruled the country. There has been constant democracy for about 70 years. While in Pakistan, there has been three periods of undemocratic military rule. This enables Indian government to spend on carry out reforms without any fear of a military coup, while Pakistan always needs to spend money to keep a check on military officers. Even today, the military is not under control of government.

2. Pakistan is officially not a secular country while India is. It officially declares Islam as the state religion. This prevents the development and protection of minorities in Pakistan, but the circumstances are not like that in India. Also, Pakistan has been supporting terrorism in the world for last 10-15 years. Many of its people believe terrorists as the protectors of Islam, and receive support from them. Today, Pakistan has become a terrorism hub, and the terrorists are causing damage to their own country. This leads to the wastage of a lot of money. India on the other hand is not a terrorism hub and there has been no death of civilians in terrorist attacks for last few years.

3. Pakistan, due to its uncooperativeness with its neighbors and sending of its terrorists to them has tense relations with all its next to door countries : India, Afghanistan and Iran. All the borders of country are far from peace. This leads to heavy military expenditure. Also, since a decade, Pakistan has taken a lot of interest in purchasing nuclear weapons to threaten its neighbors. India too has not got peaceful borders, but the condition is still better than Pakistani borders.

From the reasons, it is clear that India has become more developed due to effective use of money in hand. There must have been a stage when these two countries were at same development level, but since than Pakistan has got trapped in problems of terrorism and political instability due to its own behavior. Large percentage of GDP is spent for purchasing of arms and fighting terrorism, and little is left for welfare of the people. Also, the foreign relations of Pakistan has worsened in recent years. China and sometimes Russia are the only countries supporting it in international organizations. So the foreign funds, that have been the largest contributor to Pakistan's development since independence are reducing, and GDP growth rate is reducing to level of developed countries and ultimately HDI is now stagnating at low levels of development.

One more reason why India is more developed is that India aims to be one of the most developed countries in the world, not in South Asia, but Pakistan only aims to be more developed than India in any possible way.
