Answer:

n moist air ,PCl5 hydrolysis to POCl3 and finally gets converted to phosphoric acid. The reaction is as follows:

PCL5    +        H2O           →             POCl3      +   2HCl

                                              phosphorus oxychloride

POCl3    +       H2O         →            H3PO4      +  3HCl

                                              phosphoric acid

But on treatment of PCl5 with heavy water (D2O) only phosphorus oxychloride if formed with the liberation of 2 molecules of deuterium chloride as a side product. The reaction involved is:

PCl5    +    D2O        →             POCl3         +     2DCl

                                   phosphorus oxychloride

Answer:

Because of its strong reactivity, it can undergo partial hydrolysis.

Explanation:

  • Partial hydrolysis occurs when the hydrolysis of a molecule occurs in only a little quantity of water.
  • PCl5 is nonpolar and has a trigonal bipyramidal structure with a non-planar structure and sp3d hybridization.
  • PCl5 is unstable and highly reactive because phosphorus makes five connections with cl atoms, two of which are axial while the other three are equatorial, causing repulsion and weakening the axial bonds.
  • When PCl5 combines with water, hydrogen chloride is released, and phosphorus oxides are formed.

PCl_{5} +H_{2} O-- > POCl_{3} +2HCl. \\POCl_{3} +H_{2} O- > H_{3} PO_{4} +3HCl.
