Hi there The correct answer is I’m going to assume it was selected for as a heat absorption scheme and as a camouflage scheme. On land the black absorbs heat better than the reflective white. In water, when looking down on a swimming penguin, the dark matches the color of the deep water and the bottom. This would make it harder for leopard seals and orcas to see swimmers.
