Why people call dams as temples

This statement was given by our former P.M. Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru because when we got our independence we needed power to run our state for which energy was needed and as we didnt had those nuclear energy producing houses or the wind energy technology, but we are a nation of RIVERS and thus building dams can provide us energy and thus helped us moving, so called the temple of modern Indian. Also it was thought that their use will be increased, but we have found other souces of producing energies .
