why people use to light diyas on Diwali I don't know because I'm not from India someone please tell me in detail

People used to light diyas on Diwali because on this day, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after 14 years spent in forest killing the devon Rawan and when Lord Ram's mothen heard the news of returning of Lord Rama, she lighted the diyas and candles in Ayodhya.

Thats why we all used to light diyas and candles on the occasion of Diwali.

Diwali is also known as the festival of lights.
