why people when drink or eat something they cannot breathe air

Swallowing and breathing don't go hand in hand. When we swallow food or drink water the epiglottis covers the windpipe so that the peso phage opens up to take in the food or water that is swallowed. The windpipe that is the pharynx is completely closed and hence there is no breathing.
