Actually Petroleum(crude oil) is the parent product of all other fuels. This might be the cause.

I would like to clarify you from another point of view, fuel pump, diesel fuel pump, gas pump, gasoline pump, petrol pump, these are all the names used by people of different countries.

The fuel dispenser is the actual name which pumps the fuels like gasoline, diesel, CNG, kerosene, etc into the vehicle.

  • Bowser, gas pump -Australia
  • Petrol pump or gasoline pump -Asian and European countries
  • Gas pump or fuel dispenser - US
  • Fuel pump, diesel fuel pump - Austria, Finland, Germany, France, etc.

Actually diesel pump means injection pump which pumps diesel into the cylinder

Fuel pump is typically the device which is attached with IC engine. (Ex Mechanical fuel pump fitted with cylinder head)

Don't get confused. Hope it helps and clarifies you.

Answer:

When we look to the history of invention of fuel, Petrol is the first to make entry. The Petrol engines was thought to be commercial ready and more stable than diesel engines. The petrol vehicles struck the market and so the fuel (Petrol) dispensers (Station). As the technology progressed the development in the field of diesel engines took air. You would be surprised to know that till 1991 the constant speed diesel engines were manufactured and not variable speed. As the variable speed touched the market by that time the people are in a habit of calling the fuel dispensers by name Petrol pumps. So the legacy is followed till date. It’s not thumb rule laid by the government to call fuel station as petrol pumps. In European countries it is more often called as Fuel dispensers.
