Both phosphorus and chlorine belongs to 3rd period and have their valence electrons in 3p orbitals while hydrogen belongs to 1st period and have it's valence electron in 1s orbital. ... PH3 exists but PH5 does not. ... PH5(phosphorane) cannot be formed but PF5(phosphorous penta-flouride
