phenyl carbonation is said to be unstable bacause the + ve charge on it cannot be stabilized by resonance or any other Electronic effect. The phenyl carbonation is sp2 hybridized,but empty orbital which carries positive charge here is sp2 orbital ( 32% s character) . Thus,this makes it highly unstable.
