in most broad terms........in phosphate the compound included is Na3PO4 which hastens Calcium as its phosphate ........
while in calgon its Na2(Na4(PO3)6)- - sodium hexameta phosphate.....which makes a solvent complex Ca2P6O18 which stays in broke down shape n does not make any mischief evaporator...
This is so bcoz regardless of the possibility that cabonate molding shapes delicate scale , however it is a SCALE
phosphate molding frames delicate ooze , which can be expelled by blow down operation . so its superior to carbonate conditioning.

Chemicals are added to the water in the boiler to remove hardness producing salts. This is known as internal conditioning. There are four methods of internal treatment - colloidal conditioning, phosphate conditioning, carbonate conditioning, and calgon conditioning.

Three types of phosphates are employed in phosphate conditioning, they include mono, di and trisodium phosphates. Phosphate conditioning is more beneficial than carbonate conditioning. Some of the advantages are:

1. Phosphate conditioning can be applied to high pressure boilers.

2. It is useful for softening acidic, neutral and alkaline water. Trisodium phosphate can be used for conditioning acidic water. Monosodium and disodium phosphate can be used for alkaline and neutral water.

Carbonate conditioning is used in low pressure boilers. In this method, sodium carbonate solution is added to convert the calcium ions to soft and loose sludge. Soft CaCO3 is formed which is removed by blow down operation.
