The reason Phosphorus is stored inwater is because it will ignite on contact with air.It is kept in water because it is insoluble in water.Phosphorus is a very reactive metal , when exposed to air it starts reacting vigrously , therefore it is kept in water,it should be handle with forceps, as contact with skin may cause severe burns.

Hi friend!
Answer:
Phosphorus (P), mainly White Phosphorous, is a highly inflammable chemical that catches fire at temperatures as low as 35°C (room temperature). It burns readily and spontaneously in air, so it is stored in water as water keeps it cooler than 35°C and also cuts off O2 supply.
