why phosphorus does not have valency more than 5

atomic no. of phosphorus is 15. As you know the valency is actually the no. of electrons in the outermost shell . so when we distribute it's electrons we get

2,8,5

5 is the no. of electrons in it's outermost shell thus , it's valency is +5

It can also be -3 .

It can become stable by either losing 5 electrons (valency 5+) or by gaining 3 electrons (valency 3-)
