why phosphorus kept in the water

it is insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disuflide.It takes fire spontaneously in the air burning to the pento oxide.White phosphorus should be kept under water because it acts in the air

Phosphorus is a very reactive non-metal element . If phosphorus is kept open in the air, it reacts with the oxygen of air and catches fire. So, in order to protect phosphorus from atmospheric air, it is stored in a bottle containing water.
