1. the distance around the perimeter of the circle (circumference C) and
2. the distance across the widest part of the circle (diameter d).

The ratio of circumference to diameter is the value of Pi. The ratio C/d is constant, regardless of the circle's size. Hence, Pi is considered as a mathematical constant commonly approximated as 3.14159

Pi is an irrational number — it cannot be expressed exactly as a fraction (that means, its decimal representation never ends and never settles into a permanent repeating pattern). So an approximate value is derived for Pi.

It value is approximately equal to 3.14159265358979323846...

For practical purposes the earlier textbooks used two digit approximation (a quick and easy one), the pi was taken as 22/7 = 3.1428571...

A better approximation (but still not exact) is: 355/113 = 3.1415929...
There are many special methods used to calculate Pi.
