mycorrhiza is the fungal association with the roots of higher plants .
it colonises the root and helps the plant to absorb water and minerals from the soil while plant supports its survival .mycorrhiza also protects the plant from root borne diseases

Pinus seed cannot germinate without mycorrhizae due to a lack of water.

EXPLANATION:

The pine plant seeds cannot germinate in absence of a fungal mycorrhizae as the mycorrhizal symbiotic association helps the plant in the formation of roots. Mycorrhiza is symbiotic association between plant and fungus.

Here, plant provides food produced with the help of photosynthesis. The fungus, however, absorbs atmospheric water and  gives it to plant. for  germination of seed, water is essential . Therefore, in the absence of a mycorrhiza, the seeds of pinus cannot germinate, due to a lack of water.
