The pitcher plant often grow in places where they do not get enough nitrogen. photosynthesis fulfills the need of energy but nitrogen is supplied through the bodies of insects.

Generally pitcher plants grow in soil with low nitrogen .So they need to devour on insects or even sometimes small birds to supplement their nitrogen need.
