The pituitary gland is called the master gland because it controls all other glands present in the body as well as a number of hormones the body has to secrete.

The pituitary gland or the master gland controls the secretion of hormones from the other endocrine glands, including the thyroid, adrenal etc.
*It secretes the hormones which induce gamete formation in the gonads, testes and ovaries.
*It also secretes the growth hormone which plays an important role in the growth of adolescents 
*Main hormones secreted by pituitary gland include, Growth hormone, TSH, FSH, LH, ACTH, MSH, Vasopressin and Oxytocin.
