Plants have the ability to absorb and store solar energy. Herbivorous animals use this energy to produce and power their bodies. Carnivores do the same thing using the body of their prey, but their energy was originally derived from the sun. Even bacteria and fungi use the energy stored by plants from the sun.

There are some organisms that can produce energy from heat sources (subsurface heat). It is usually found in deep water. But they are not really part of our food chain.

Basically, if all the plants die, almost all the animals die too. Without them, there is no good way to harness the sun's energy for nourishment.
