The green leaves of plants carry out both photosynthesis (in light) and respiration (all the time). Photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide to make sugar and produces oxygen as a byproduct. Respiration uses oxygen to release energy from stored sugar and produces carbon dioxide as a byproduct.

Explanation:

Plants photosynthesise during the day and because they are living organisms, they respire all the time.

Oxygen is given out during the day because the rate of photosynthesis exceeds that of respiration ( more is produced than is needed)

Oxygen is taken in during the night because photosynthesis has stopped and oxygen has to be supplied from the surroundings.
