Plasma Membrane is called selectively permeable membrane because, it allows only certain materials to enter/exit the cell.

For example:-

Let's say there is a material A and material B, where, Material A is harmful for cell, while Material B is safe.

So, if they both try to enter the cell, the plasma membrane at first would detect which is good or bad for cell.

In this way, Plasma Membrane would get to know that Material B is safe, so it would allows its entry, while Plasma Membrane has detected Material A as harmful, so, it would not give entry to Material A.

So, we can say that Plasma Membrane is Selectively Permeable in Nature.
