Cell membrane is made up of several proteins with distinct structures, each having affinity towards different & specific ligands. Now in general living cell require specific molecules to carry out the biochemical activities. On other hand there are several types of molecules present in extracellular environment, out of which some molecules needed by cell. Selective permeability help cell to take selective molecules inside in co ntrolled manner, which also important for maintaining equilibrium inside cell. Lastly selective permeability prevent entry of molecules which may have adverse effects on normal cellular functions.
