The poem "the mirror " by Sylvia Plath.

Both the mirror and the lake of clear water show true image of the person. The lake shows true image in sunlight (not moonlight) .

As the person approaches the mirror the image approaches the person too. This is similar to a fish at a depth inside the lake swimming upwards towards the surface.

Both the lake and the mirror bury things deep inside them. The mirror buries and swallows the images and beauty of the past. The lake drowns and swallows any heavy things.

Both shine in the light are transparent . Both stand still and calm.

People like to bend over the lake to search deep inside the lake out of curiosity. It is fun. People bend over the mirror to look and search for their beauty. That gives them pleasure and satisfaction.

The mirror is compared to a lake which has depth.Just as a lake shows the true reflection of a person ,so does the mirror ,and both have depth . Here the poet talk not only about external beauty but also the internal beauty of a person.
