a.Politics is important because it determines what governance means. Far beyond the role of government, at any level, politics determines how we manage our own world and the world around us.

b.Politics is trying to make meaning out of the confusion of living. Human beings are hard wired to seek meaning and, through meaning, truth. Contrary to Maslow's famous hierarchy, the human need for meaning may be more important than food, shelter or even life itself. In the final analysis, this may be the most significant reason politics is important.

c.Politics is how someone explains things to you, or how you explain them to yourself. There is a great failing, too, in that often this meaning is conveyed by ideologies which at best are someone's attempt to make meaning out of chaos.

d.Through politics we represent the people we want to be. Hopefully, that is not too far from the people we really are. We often 'print the legend' and ignore the reality. I'd like to think it's not denial but an aspiration.

Politics is a necessary aspect of human nature that proves we are contradictory. Goethe said, “What we agree with leaves us inactive, but contradiction makes us productive.”

Politics is important because we must govern ourselves somehow.
